I came to them from the POV of a snotty student who'd already devoured the work of Burroughs, Ballard, PK Dick etc., but I've always wondered what kind of effect they must have had on, say, young fans of Moorcock's Elric books!

An actor who I think might have made a really good Jerry Cornelius is actually future Withnail & I director Bruce Robinson - he was *very* handsome and charismatic in the late 60s/early 70s, but also kinda scrawny and lethargic, and captured some perfect Jerry-like mannerisms in his role in Barney Platt-Mills' "Private Road", which I saw at the BFI the other week.

And yeah, obviously Moorcock and Ballard were on exactly the same page re: the whole New Worlds avant-sci-fi apocalyptic aesthetic; I've always thought of the Cornelius books as being close companions of "The Artocity Exhibition", "Crash" etc...Benhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14951955227326548340noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3369610344911858466.post-26842867075470514692010-10-11T19:04:12.941+01:002010-10-11T19:04:12.941+01:00Thanks for an excellent article.
A cure for cancer...Thanks for an excellent article.
A cure for cancer changed my life at 12. Not because I had cancer but because I read the Moorcock book. It was my first encounter with Jerry Cornelius and non-linear narrative and cut-ups and completely captured my imagination. The only downside was that I was pretty much incapable of writing a proper 'story' for 20 years.
I obtained a rough old copy of The Final Programme on video from the States years back when it wasn't easily available and that's how I first saw it. I love the film despite it's appalling faults which you capture perfectly in your piece.
Jenny Runacre particularly rocks I think. Androgyny was a powerful force in music and culture in the early 70s and Bowie and Suzie Quattro laid the ground work in my case for absorbing Mr. Cornelius even though Finch's version is too much of a bloke for me.
I'm wracking my brains for who could have played a more dandified version of the role in the 70s without it being terrible...
(Jason King was kind of Jerry Cornelius's dodgy uncle.)
You're right about how visual the books are. I'm a Ballard fan and it's never really sunk in just how Moorcock's entropic visions syncronise so well with Ballard's as the picture at the top of the piece shows.
You made me want to watch the film all over again and read the Cornelius books - mission accomplished!Paul H Williamshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10481838648955663771noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3369610344911858466.post-70422941199603651842010-04-05T00:59:50.023+01:002010-04-05T00:59:50.023+01:00Excellent article, I'm just re-reading the Cor...Excellent article, I'm just re-reading the Cornelius books for the first time in 20 years & I'm enjoying them even more this time 'round...ROOKSBYhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00671866914636998375noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3369610344911858466.post-61564073294924742332010-01-15T10:19:12.978+00:002010-01-15T10:19:12.978+00:00Yes, I've got that edition too - I remember it...Yes, I've got that edition too - I remember it being a great read!Benhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14951955227326548340noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3369610344911858466.post-35550084593105120232010-01-13T22:33:55.721+00:002010-01-13T22:33:55.721+00:00The mystery solved! It sounds worth watching, even if I have to steel myself for disappointment. And you've made me want to reread 'The Adventures of Una Persson and Catherine Cornelius in the 20th Century'--I've got the Corgi(?) edition with the two women naked, clutching guns. Now that's a cover.JRSMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04430775461763521797noreply@blogger.com
