I'm just about to sit down and write my follow up post having finished viewing the series, so will have to see where they take me!

I must admit that, for much of my viewing of the new series, it didn't occur to me that Lynch might be deliberately deconstructing/detourning the 'modern TV show' aesthetic... my initial impression was more that he and Frost were just rambling on self-indulgently to no very clear purpose, but yes, as things go on, they reach such a level of irresolvable absurdity that you start to realise you've been 'had' to a certain extent.... although to what end and to what degree of success this is achieved is still debatable of course.Benhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14951955227326548340noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3369610344911858466.post-43455711439353765752018-01-18T01:58:52.750+00:002018-01-18T01:58:52.750+00:00Hi Ben. Although I experienced the new season as a worthy entry in the Lynch-Canon from early on, I also was a bit anxious about the forced weirdness - even more so during the 'comical', than during the dark/surreal moments, which I found quite convincing overall.

More importantly, I instantly shared your concers regarding the nature of the overarching Twin-Peaks-Mythology, that comes dangerously close to the structure of some overtly familiar manichean SF/Horror-Epic, seemingly spoiling much of the Trademark-Lynch-Flair of mind-boggling, impossilble mystery.

I think Lynch finally succeeds in establishing this. But apart from that point. I think that Twin Peaks 2017 is a great vehicle for Lynch as a visual artist. As you rightly pointed out, he operates in the polished surroundings of modern 'serious' TV-Shows. But for the most part, he deconstructs this aesthetic quite effectively, creating narrative holes and ellipses all the while, and straining the charakter-oriented appouch of this kind of entertainment ad absurdum.
Furthermore, as we know, the man spends much of his time painting and sculpting, and one can grasp his artistic mastery in all those oddly crude, hand-made-style sets, objects and special effects on display in this season. So, leaving aside all of the Lynch-cues we anticipated and even got from this new opus, I think that Lynch does set out into some new territory here, but maybe more on a stylistic level, than content-wise. (I would argue that he already told everything he had exhaustively in Inland Empire, so maybe I just didn't expect all that much on that front).Patrickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03765192862192108749noreply@blogger.com
